On December 6, 2021, Stellar (XLM) will be supporting an opt-in feature called muxed (or multiplexed) accounts. These are accounts that exist “virtually” under a traditional Stellar account address. It combines the familiar address with a 64-bit integer ID and can be used to distinguish multiple “virtual” accounts that share an underlying “real” account.

This change is an improvement to Stellar’s current Memo ID field. Rather than a string used in Memo ID today, Users can now explicitly use the Muxed account to delineate addresses and payments.

Here’s what BitGo is doing to support this new feature:
- We have published a new version of the SDK
- This is opt-in – if you want to use Muxed accounts, you will need to run the latest version
- If you upgrade to the latest version, you will be able to use muxed accounts starting 12/1/21

Here’s what this means for teams using the latest SDK / express:
- Users can send to existing accounts (non-muxed)
- Users can send to muxed accounts
- Users can receive from existing accounts (non-muxed)
- Users can receive from muxed accounts

Here’s what this means for teams using an older version of the SDK / express:
- Users can send to existing accounts (non-muxed)
- Users cannot send to muxed accounts
- Users can receive from existing accounts (non-muxed)
- Users can receive from muxed accounts
